Dear John,

Global freedom has declined for 18 consecutive years, according to Freedom in the World, and few factors have done as much to drive this deterioration as the dismantling of representative rule.

There were two principal causes for this downturn: rigged elections and coups and power grabs.

But the examples of The Gambia and Fiji show that representative rule can be restored after a period of severe degradation, It is extraordinarily costly and difficult for countries to bounce back from a full democratic breakdown—making it even more imperative for democracy’s defenders to shore up representative institutions wherever they currently exist.

Call to Lift Travel Ban on Saudi Actvist Loujain al-Hathloul

Freedom House joins other organizations in calling on Saudi Arabia’s authorities to immediately lift the illegal travel ban imposed on Loujain al-Hathloul. One of Saudi Arabia’s most celebrated advocates for women’s rights, she was arrested, tortured and imprisoned for over 1,000 days for her activism before being conditionally released from prison in 2021. Since then she has been under an arbitrary travel ban with no expiry date.

Election Watch: Venezuela

Venezuela’s presidential election is scheduled for July. Incumbent Nicolás Maduro, who took office in 2013, is running for reelection to another six-year term. The Maduro regime’s ongoing efforts to manipulate access to the ballot have dimmed once modest hopes that the presidential election will be fairly contested.

National democratic governance in Georgia is shaped by deep political polarization, with a government focused on preserving power and a fractured opposition. There were no significant electoral reforms in 2023, but the European Council granted Georgia EU candidate status in December.
