When I was 18 years old, I watched as ICE officers knocked on our door to arrest my father and me, and forced ankle monitors onto my mother and sister.
This traumatic scene unfolded after years of legal battles and confusion ever since my family applied for political asylum. Our lawyer never told us our case would carry deportation orders for our entire family.
This is the reality for so many young people in the United States, living in the shadows to escape deportations, afraid every day of being separated from their families.
Luckily, DACA arrived soon after, and my world opened up. I was free to go to school and work, support my family and secure my future. DACA changed everything for me — and now it’s in greater danger than it has ever been before.
DACA is likely on its way to the Supreme Court for the second time, and we can’t be certain what comes next. But the one thing I know for sure is my family and families like mine need more than temporary protections. We are contributing members of our society, and should not be treated as threats or targets. Enough is enough.

After I was released from detention, I was drowning in shame and fear. I became isolated and depressed, scared to share my story, afraid I would be judged. When I found the United We Dream community, I was transformed by the love and acceptance of my peers, who understood my struggles and gave me the support I needed to break my silence.
Now I speak out unapologetically about the horrors of ICE and the need for permanent protections, because I know that I’m not alone.
