On June 12 this groundbreaking workshop will explore the intricate connections between gender, race, and colonialism, offering participants a deep dive into the systems of oppression that shape our world. 

Led by the esteemed facilitator Malcolm Shanks, Breaking the Binary promises to be a transformative journey of discovery and empowerment. Through interactive discussions, reflective exercises, and insightful presentations, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how the gender binary operates through the lens of white supremacy and colonialism.

This engaging session will include:

• Unraveling historical roots of the gender binary and its reinforcement through racial hierarchies
• Discovering the stories of transgender and gender non-conforming African/Indigenous individuals who resisted colonialism and challenged the gender binary
• Building a toolkit of language and perspectives rooted in Black feminist theory to discuss gender identity and expression
• Analyzing the systemic mechanisms that uphold the gender binary and perpetuate inequalities
