Hi all!

This graduation season, some high school seniors are filled with stress and doubt when they should be celebrating the end of their K-12 careers. I’m talking about those who may still be awaiting final financial aid award letters that determine where, and in some cases if, they can afford to attend college this fall.

The Hechinger Report fanned out across the U.S. to learn more about how delays and glitches in the federal financial aid system is creating uncertainty for applicants and could roll back years of college attainment efforts. Spend time with these stories and send us your own, as we continue to see how the FAFSA fiasco plays out.

We also have a more uplifting look at efforts to keep teen parents in class in Spokane, Washington, via a charter school that provides child care, baby supplies, mental health counseling and other support as students work toward graduation based on customized education plans. And Jill Barshay brings us the latest on a relatively new trend: paying tutoring companies by how much students’ test scores improved. You’ll find all of these stories and never miss one by becoming a Hechinger Report member. Help us spread the word!

What does that financial aid offer really mean?

Congratulations! You've been selected to receive financial aid to help cover the costs of college. But what exactly is an “FSEOG” or “Unsubsidized Stafford,” and how much of the money you've been promised is really just a student loan? Our newly relaunched Offer Letter Decoder tool can help, providing insight into what kinds of financial aid colleges and universities are really offering.
