Memory, grief, and celebration

This was Memorial Day weekend in the US, and I hope it was meaningful for those who observed it. I took part in the other tradition often associated with this holiday in the US: weddings. Due to the three-day weekend, it is one of the most popular wedding dates, and on Saturday my cousin married his high school sweetheart.

Our video of the week offers another kind of memorial. A few weeks ago, I mentioned Jonathan Tran’s column about attending the trial of someone who killed one of Tran’s students in a hit-and-run incident. In a longer and more emotional video than is typical for our YouTube channel, Tran talks for 51 minutes with Clark and Diane Grotberg, the parents of the student who was killed. They discuss many topics, including God’s presence in the grieving process.

We also have some exciting new articles—including one from me! I am a huge fan of James Baldwin, and I was delighted to review a new book about Baldwin’s ideas and legacy. Plus a reflection on coming out of retirement for rural ministry, a report about Ukrainian military chaplains, and much more below.

Email me: Did you do any memorializing or celebrating this weekend?

Navigating James Baldwin’s legacy

“I was interested in how Greg Garrett would present Baldwin’s own relationship to the faith. Baldwin was clear he had left the church, but there’s something religious about so many of his visions and aspirations.”

The wilderness of a rural ministry circuit

“When I sat with members of the congregation with a worshiping attendance of five, I learned that three of them were baptized there as babies. They are now in their 70s.”

VIDEO: Jonathan Tran with Clark and Diane Grotberg on their family’s 7-year wait for justice

CC Voices columnist Jonathan Tran talks with the parents of David Grotberg, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident seven years ago. They discuss truth-telling, sustaining faith, grief, grace, and more.

Ukrainian military chaplains learn pluralism on the job

“The Ukrainian chaplains I spoke with do pray with soldiers. Yet they talked about it reluctantly, like it was a confession.”

Facing Failure

Hidden from the road
by long ago planted
climbing roses,
I sit silent sentinel ...
