Dear ,
As we continue facing the impacts of COVID-19 and one of the most challenging times in recent history, I hope that you’re taking the necessary precautions to keep you and your loved ones safe. Today is my last day as the interim president and chief executive officer of the Southern Poverty Law Center and SPLC Action Fund. What started as a three- to six-month interim period turned into one of the most transformative years I have ever experienced. Not a day passed without me learning something new. I have had the privilege to meet with many supporters over the last year, and I am grateful for you and your dedication to justice. The SPLC is a special place because it partners with supporters like you who are committed to creating a more equitable world. As I leave, I am thrilled that internationally renowned human and civil rights leader Margaret Huang is taking the helm. She has spent the last two months engaging with staff, meeting with leaders throughout the civil rights community and assisting in making key decisions regarding the hiring of senior leaders and the trajectory of key SPLC initiatives. As a high school track athlete, one of the most exciting races that I ran was the 4x4 100-meter relay. The race is fast, and success depends on the precision of each baton handoff. This feels like that moment again. As I pass the baton to Margaret, I have no doubt that her leadership will make a tremendous difference in further deepening the SPLC’s partnerships with allied organizations and expanding the impact of its work, which is needed now more than ever. Take a moment to hear a special message from Margaret about the pandemic.
Please join me in welcoming Margaret Huang as the SPLC’s new president and chief executive officer.
In solidarity,
Karen Baynes-Dunning
