John,

Earlier today, I was in White Bear Lake at Union Cemetery for the Memorial Day service. Our American flag was flying. There were prayers, speeches, and song. It was a somber event on a gray, rainy spring morning. In cemeteries across America lay the heroes who sacrificed in defense of our freedom, our Constitution, and the country we now have inherited.

Today’s politics is too often ugly and empty of the values we honor on Memorial Day. Politics is important, especially when our democracy and rights are under threat. But service, sacrifice, and honor are the values that unite Americans and keep our nation strong. We must defend democracy, freedom, our fundamental rights, and always live up to the sacred oath to protect and defend the Constitution.

On this Memorial Day holiday, I hope you enjoy your family and have some time to relax. But please, take a moment to remember, reflect, and honor the men and women – and their families – who gave their lives for our freedom. They have made America great, and we owe them a debt of gratitude today and every day.

With best regards,
