News from Representative Hayes

Dear John,

On Memorial Day, we honor service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. During this time, we reflect on the freedoms we cherish and the strength of the families those heroes have left behind. Throughout my time in Congress, service to veterans and their families has remained a top priority.

Each Memorial Day, we affirm our commitment to honor their service and remind their loved ones they are not alone.

I have worked hard to do both things. In 2023, I introduced the Caring for Survivors Act, which would decrease the time frame a veteran must be disabled to qualify, allowing more survivors to become eligible for benefits. This bill builds on my legislation to support veterans by increasing the monthly rate of Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) payable to surviving spouses through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), reducing the financial burden placed on veterans and their families.

On April 10, 2024, I testified before the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs highlighting outdated policies the Caring for Survivors Act aims to correct, such as administrative barriers that block surviving families from benefits earned by service members.

The Caring for Survivors Act would also increase monthly benefits for survivors of service members by $300. This legislation awaits further action by the full House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

This weekend I attended several Memorial Day parades and events to honor our fallen heroes and their families. In Waterbury, the Gold Star Families City, residents turned out for a parade and memorial service honoring distinguished Civil War Wadham’s Post No. 49 members and USAF S/Sgt. Paul K. Pernerewski Sr, father of Waterbury Mayor Paul K. Pernerewski.

The Middlebury community came together to pay tribute to our military and reflect on the loss of so many in war. Veterans, Scouts, first responders and student marching bands were on hand to honor the fallen.

Neighbors and friends showed their appreciation and respect at Memorial Day parades around the district. I am always moved by the parents who attend with small children and patiently explain the significance of the groups, historic vehicles and symbols displayed in the parade. Our children must know the history and meaning behind this day of reflection.

For their courage, we are forever indebted to the men and women of our United States Armed Services. I will continue to honor the sacrifice of our service members and work to ensure military families have access to the resources and support they have earned.

If you are the surviving family of a service member who needs assistance accessing benefits, receiving awards, or navigating the VA, please contact my office at (860) 223-8412.

On this Memorial Day and every day, it is my honor and privilege to serve as your representative in Congress.
