Memorial Day has always been such an interesting holiday to me—culturally, it’s seen as the de facto start of Summer. It’s a day for barbecues and spending time with family and friends, enjoying the hard-won freedom that our country has fought for time and again. At the same time, it’s a day for somber remembrance to those who gave literally everything to secure freedom for our people.
North Carolina has a proud history of military service. During World War II, over 360,000 North Carolinians answered the call to defend our nation. Heroes like Major George Preddy, the top P-51 Mustang ace, and the brave souls who stormed the beaches of Normandy exemplify the courage and determination that define our state and showcase our value of being first in freedom.
This day is not only a time for remembrance but also a moment to reflect on the enduring legacy of those who served. Their sacrifices remind us of the values we hold dear: liberty, justice, and opportunity for everyone. America is a nation that promises anyone can go on to fulfill their potential, and that’s a promise that men and women have fought and died to protect.
On this solemn day, I hope you’ll join me in honoring our fallen heroes by reaffirming our commitment to uphold the values they died for. Let’s ensure that their ultimate sacrifice wasn’t in vain and show them and their families that their service will never be forgotten.
