John, this day took on a very different meaning for me after my deployment in 2005.

Today, and every Memorial Day, we must remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.

When I was deployed to Afghanistan as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, I was honored to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the best soldiers in the world. It forged the strongest friendships I have ever experienced.

But unfortunately, not all of my brothers and sisters made it home. There were some who struggled with mental health and lost their lives to the invisible wounds of war. We owe an unpayable debt to their families.

I will never forget their sacrifice.

Today, make “Thank you for your service,” a meaningful act, the beginning of a conversation and connection. Not just a perfunctory gesture.

My heart goes out to the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and gave their lives to serve this country.
