Is your bottled water really “natural”? And is it really being recycled?
A series of new lawsuits are claiming that water bottles using labels like “100 percent mountain spring water” and “natural spring water” are deceptive - because it’s likely tainted with tiny particles from the plastic it’s encased in.
And then the plastic bottle finds its way somewhere on the street, on the beach, in a landfill or in the ocean, because it turns out only a small fraction of what is thrown in recycling bins ever actually gets recycled.
Not only does this plastic waste potentially have a negative impact on our health, as these lawsuits are alleging, but it’s also significantly contributing to climate change. Did you know that by 2050, global emissions from plastic production could triple and consume one-fifth of the world’s remaining carbon budget?
Every year, over 400 million metric tons of plastic are produced, clogging waterways, floating in the ocean, and posing a threat to our health and other wildlife.
With plastic production expected to double or even triple by 2050, emissions could surpass those of over 1,700 coal plants. That means even if we execute ambitious plans to decarbonize the power grid, plastic pollution could still mean our climate goals remain out of reach.
SEEC Member Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) knows how we won’t be able to break our dependence from plastics without federal action. That’s why he introduced the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act, which tackles every end of the plastic supply chain, from requiring the producers to take responsibility for their pollution, to making it easier for consumers to recycle.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future. But if you'd like to receive fewer emails, we understand. You can click here to only get our most important messages, or you can unsubscribe.
