Friend,
In 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War, Decoration Day was first observed as a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. It’s said that it was set to be observed annually on May 30th because flowers would be in bloom across the nation.
Over time, Decoration Day evolved into Memorial Day, and we have continued to observe this holiday on the last Monday of May alongside the continued blooming spring flowers.
The Civil War soldiers who inspired Memorial Day fought for a cause that members of our military have continued to fight for throughout our country’s history – democracy.
Our nation's strength is centered in our Constitution’s guarantee of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and that our government will be run through a democratic process of electing leaders. We know that too many communities worldwide do not share these privileges. Today, when you notice flowers in your community or think of a loved one you’ve lost in combat, please join me in honoring our service men and women who dedicated their lives to this pursuit.
