President's Message

Join us for Healthy Vision Month 2024! A comprehensive vision health program is a school nurse intervention that significantly impacts a student’s overall health and learning. NASN partnered with The National Center for Children’s Vision and Eye Health at Prevent Blindness to provide national guidance for school nurses and others involved in front-line vision screening.

NASN proudly supports the Early Detection of Vision Impairments in Children Act (EDVI), which would establish the first federal program to address children’s vision and eye health. Without it, children face numerous challenges accessing the vision and eye health services they need to thrive. Please visit the EDVI Act website for additional information, including downloadable fact sheets and resources.

While on the subject of vision care, did you know NASN members can provide students who qualify with a certificate to receive essential vision care at no cost to the school or student? Learn more about the VSP Vision™ Eyes of Hope® gift certificate program and all the benefits of NASN membership.

NASN News and Highlights

Framework: Standards of Practice

NASN's School Nursing Practice Framework™ (Framework) illustrates the key principles of professional school nursing practice. The Standards of Practice principle, depicted as the foundational layer, is crucial as it supports all activities represented by the four overlapping practice principles. This firm foundation is necessary to provide legally sound, evidence-based, clinically competent, quality care. View the Framework Handout and Framework Chart to improve your understanding of the alignment of competencies with Framework principles and to incorporate the Framework into your nursing practice.

Social-Emotional Wellness Is Essential for Students

Mental health needs in school are increasing, and school nurses are in a perfect position to support social-emotional learning and implement coping strategies to promote student success. The NASN School Nurse article The Role of the School Nurse in Social-Emotional Assessment and Intervention Using the MTSS Framework features the implementation of social-emotional interventions in the school health office for all students using the multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework.
