[1]Alex Padilla for Senate

Friends,

As a member of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, I take very seriously the role of our courts — particularly the Supreme Court — in our government.

It is critical that the American people trust that our courts are impartial, and make their rulings based only on the application of the law.

But right now, there is a historic crisis of public confidence in the Supreme Court.

After almost a year of reporting from Propublica and others, it’s public knowledge that Clarence Thomas accepted gifts, luxury travel, and expensive vacations from billionaires with business before the court.

And now, as the court is set to hear cases related to the 2020 election and the failed insurrection on January 6, news come out that Samuel Alito flew an upside-down flag — a symbol used by those who want to deny the fair outcome of the election — outside of his home in the days after the insurrection.

If the Supreme Court continues to refuse to hold themselves accountable, then it’s on us to act.

Yes, Justice Alito should recuse himself from any case involving Donald Trump or the 2020 election. But this issue affects the entire court, not only one justice in one case.

That’s why I’m working to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act. This bill would add limitations on who they can receive gifts from and in which amounts, require justices to disclose all forms of income, and require justices to recuse themselves from votes in which they have a conflict of interest.

In other words, it would hold the Supreme Court to the exact same ethical standards as the rest of government, including me as a Senator.

Friends, will you add your name to say you support the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act? It’s important we hear from a lot of people on this issue, especially as the Court prepares to hear cases on the 2020 election.
