John,
Today marks the 4 year anniversary since George Floyd was brutally murdered by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin.
As many of you may recall, on May 25th, 2020, Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on George Floyd's neck for 9? minutes on the street outside a convenience store where George Floyd allegedly attempted to use a counterfeit $20 bill.
Despite George Floyd's calm and clear communication about not being able to breathe and plead for life, Derek Chauvin continued to press on George Floyd's neck while his fellow officers, former Minneapolis police officers Tou Thao, J Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane, stood by.
After video evidence of the encounter spread far and wide, so did the anger. So did the activism. Despite an unprecedented pandemic, thousands of people across the United States (and beyond) flooded the streets to protest for justice in the name of George Floyd and others against police brutality. By June 6th, 2020, half a million people took to the streets in nearly 550 places across the U.S.
There are various ways to fight against police violence while honoring George Floyd. Whether you can pitch in a donation to organizations like the
Floyd Family Center or the
George Floyd Global Memorial, help a family member or friend register to vote,
or sign our latest petition to remove cops from traffic stops, there's a way for you to get involved in the fight to eradicate white supremacy and end state-sanctioned violence.
Today and every day, we honor George's life by coming together and recommitting to the fight for Black liberation.
Rest in power, George Floyd.
In love and solidarity,
Black Lives Matter
