Hi there.
In just a moment, I am going to ask you to make a contribution to my campaign for U.S. Senate in Michigan. But before you do, you deserve to know why this request is so important.
In 6-days, we are going to close the books on our May fundraising drive.
And because of a quirk in official FEC reporting that has to do with the presidential race that requires ActBlue (the platform we, and most Democratic campaigns, use for our online contributions) is now required to file a MONTHLY report detailing how many contributions they bring in.
Instead of making our numbers public every three months, everything our campaign raises online in May will be public – both the total amount and number of donations. Republicans are NOT required to report every month because their online fundraising platform – WinRed – is legally structured differently, and therefore subject to different reporting requirements.
That is a considerable advantage for our opponents. They can see where we are, but we are flying blind when it comes to their numbers until the official FEC deadline ends in June.
Practically, that means our opponents will get a sense of whether or not we are vulnerable to attack spending. If we are, they will launch attack ads against our campaign. If we show a strong report, maybe they'll decide to spend that money elsewhere.
So we have an ambitious internal goal we’re hoping to hit for May in order to showcase the strength of our campaign when ActBlue files their report. Yes, because of the reasons above, but also because the fundraising goals we have are what we need to win.
Can you contribute to my Senate campaign today? Our average online donation is around $30. Some give more. Others give less. All that matters is you're donating to help us show a huge number of donations when our online fundraising numbers become public.
