Dear john,

This week, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved my legislation to overhaul the federal prison system on a vote of 392-2. The bipartisan Federal Prison Oversight Act will establish new, independent oversight of the Federal Bureau of Prisons and protect both the staff and incarcerated individuals in our federal prison system. This legislation now heads to the Senate, where Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Mike Braun (R-IN), and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chair of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, lead the companion bill. I look forward to our continued work to get this legislation signed into law!

On Friday, we remembered the painful anniversary of the school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas. My heart is with every family who is still learning to live with an empty chair at their kitchen table. As we remember each beautiful life that was cut short, we must also recommit ourselves to our responsibility to take action to prevent these tragedies.

Post on X from @RepLucyMcBath reads: "Today we mourn the students and staff of Robb Elementary in Uvalde who never returned home from school just two years ago. Who are we if we do not protect our children, especially in places where they should be safe, happy, and free? Who are we if we do not act?" The post includes a graphic featuring the names of the Robb Elementary school shooting victims.

This week, many high school graduation ceremonies took place across our district. I want to send my congratulations to every graduating senior who is preparing to take their next step into adulthood. No matter what is in store for our young people, I want them to be reminded that what they do matters a great deal to our community. The future of this nation is bright because of the contributions they will make!

Thank you for taking the time to read this update. It is my honor to serve our community in Congress. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with my office.
