Today marks a solemn day for our state as we remember the 19 students and 2 teachers whose lives were taken from them along with the 17 others injured at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022. This shooting shook our nation to its core and was the worst loss of life at a school since Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.
No family should ever have to face the pain of losing their loved ones in such a painful way.
This year, the Department of Justice released its critical incident report. This report detailed the mass failure of law enforcement to protect the vulnerable children and educators who were at Robb Elementary School that day.
Our school districts must learn from this tragedy and continue to collaborate with law enforcement to ensure that there is an adequate safety plan in place for every campus. We cannot afford to make the same mistake and allow law enforcement to put shooters over schools.
As your representative, I've been listening to your voices and I along with my colleagues have been working tirelessly to address this issue. The time for systemic change is now. A majority of TX-29 constituents, and Americans, support common sense measures to prevent mass shootings casualties.
This year, I have signed onto multiple pieces of legislation to build upon the work we did when Congress passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the most meaningful gun safety legislation in nearly three decade:
- Original Cosponsor of H.Res. 348: Declaring gun violence a public health crisis
- Original Cosponsor of H.R. 2403: Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2023
- Original Cosponsor of H.R. 698: Assault Weapons Ban of 2023
- Cosponsor of H.R. 396: Closing the Bump Stock Loophole Act of 2023
- Cosponsor of H.R. 4992: Ghost Guns and Untraceable Firearms Act of 2023
I continue to pray for those young souls who are no longer with us and the families of those affected. May they be granted peace and comfort. However, NOW is the time to put prevention over prayers. The next generation shouldn't have to experience lockdowns, busses to reunification centers, and the loss of their classmates. Schools are meant for books not for bullets.
Together we can protect the children of the state of Texas and ensure we're all safe from preventable gun violence.
Sincerely,
Sylvia R. Garcia Member of Congress
