Cross-border learning is key to our future success

Dear John,
I’ve just returned from the second Green Wave Gathering, hosted by Ipas and partners last week in Mexico City. (That's me above at top left with attendees of the event, posing with the iconic green bandanas that have come to symbolize the Green Wave movement the world over.)

It was a truly inspiring event that united 150 activists from across the Americas to discuss strategies for how we can protect and expand abortion access—learning from each other’s struggles and successes.

While there, I was able to visit a clinic where Ipas-trained providers offer comprehensive sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion. In Mexico City, abortion is legal during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and available free of charge at public health centers. It’s a stark contrast to the situation in the United States—and also an inspiration.

I met so many strong, committed activists last week, and I take with me the confidence that we can—and will—reclaim abortion rights in the United States. Cross-border learning and movement building is simply invaluable in our fight, and I know we’ll continue collaborating with our partners throughout the region.
