Big California legislative update, friend:

Today is the deadline for California bills to pass out of their house of origin, and of the 14 EnviroVoters’ priority bills that needed to be voted on this week, 13 of them advanced!

That means we are one step closer to holding corporate polluters accountable, transitioning to a clean energy economy, protecting our democratic process, and so much more.

In addition to the HUNDREDS of calls and emails Californians sent to legislators in the past couple weeks, our ace legislative team in Sacramento has been meeting legislators all year long, from bill authors to potential swing votes. In fact, we met with DOZENS of offices of target legislators just last week to get our bills over the finish line!

This summer, bills passed out of the Senate will be heard in Assembly committees and vice versa, leading into the final floor vote deadline in August. That means we’ve got a whole new set of legislators who need to hear from us about critical legislation.

Despite corporate polluters trying to stop us at every turn, we WILL get our legislative agenda passed — but not without your help, friend. Can you make a donation today to support our advocacy efforts that have proven to be effective?

My team here in Sacramento combed through hundreds of bills introduced in the Legislature this year to produce a list of EnviroVoters’ 28 priority bills. Here are a few of the transformational bills that are advancing:

AB 1866 will protect taxpayers, create thousands of jobs, and safeguard communities from the urgent climate and public health crisis of idle oil wells.

SB 1221, which would ensure that low-income Californians are the first beneficiaries of the transition away from fossil fuels, passed the Senate with 70% of the vote!

AB 3233 defends local democracy and affirms the rights of cities and counties to protect their communities from oil and gas pollution.

Plus, there are key “two-year” bills that already advanced to the next chamber and will receive votes in the coming months as well, such as SB 252, which would make public pensions divest from fossil fuels, and AB 1176, which will require local governments to plan for the electrification of buildings and cars.

Passing all of the remaining bills on our list is ambitious, but there’s nothing we love more at EnviroVoters than a challenge. Besides, we can’t afford to kick crucial climate policy down the road. The time to act is NOW.

As the fifth largest economy in the world, California has an outsized responsibility to create a roadmap for climate action. What we do will impact not only Californians but all Americans for generations to come.

Friend, it’s not easy trying to take on some of the most powerful players on a global scale as a small nonprofit. We rely on the generosity of our members to allow us to continue to GET STUFF DONE.

By pitching in even just a few bucks, you’ll be making an investment in our work to champion bold environmental changes and help us resist Big Oil’s influence in Sacramento — which has global ramifications.

Friend, our organization has spent all year lobbying for California leaders to pass bold climate solutions, and it’s paying off!

A whopping 16 transformative climate, environmental, and democracy bills have advanced through their respective committees to receive votes on the floor of the Assembly and Senate this week — with votes starting AS SOON AS TODAY! In fact, for the first time in six cycles, all of our priority bills made it through the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee.

This is a direct result of the multifaceted advocacy efforts of groups like EnviroVoters and the years of work we’ve done to educate legislators on climate issues and shape the narrative around the urgency of the crisis.

We have just FOUR DAYS LEFT to fight with everything we’ve got to get every one of our bills through their chamber and onto the next one.

We’re up against MILLIONS in Big Oil lobby spending. We don’t need to beat them dollar for dollar, but we need a little boost to fight back. Can you chip in $15 or more to help support our tried and true advocacy efforts?

It’s all hands on deck, Friend.

At EnviroVoters, we’ve launched call drives, organized people to meet with their legislators, and been in the Capitol day after day demanding bold climate action from our state’s legislators.

And it’s working! We’re confident we can get all 16 of these critical bills passed, and it’s absolutely imperative we do.

For instance, SB 1497 would require the largest fossil fuel polluters to pay their fair share of the damage they’ve caused. SB 1221 would lead to zero-emission alternatives to gas pipeline replacement projects. And AB 2079 will help protect sources of drinking water.

These are real solutions to hold corporate polluters accountable, transition to a clean energy economy, and make sure we have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.

These are not policies we can compromise on. And despite Big Oil throwing millions of dollars into lobbying against these bills, we know that we can fight back and win. We’ve done it before and we can do it again.

In this last week, please contribute to our campaign to advance groundbreaking climate and environmental policy for the sake of future generations →
