John, it's Hank Johnson.
I'm a seasoned lawyer – I've got 27 years under my belt, serving 12 as a judge on top of that – but one of my most formative experiences was outside of the courtroom.
After graduating from law school, I spent months as a cab driver so I could fund opening my own practice. |
What was supposed to be a temporary gig turned into a life-lesson that I take with me to the U.S. House of Representatives every day. |
As a cab driver, I met so many different kinds of people: laborers, white-collar businessmen, mothers and children, retirees and everyone in between. None of them had any clue that I was a lawyer. To them, I was just the guy taking them from point A to point B. |
But with each ride, I got the opportunity to learn about how people from all walks of life interact with the world around them. |
