Maine Public Lands

Access Reminders - Plan Your Memorial Day Weekend

The Bureau of Parks and Lands manages more than 640,000 acres of Public Reserved Lands across Maine including Tumbledown, Cutler Coast, Scopan, and other popular destinations. Unlike State Parks, Public Lands are minimally staffed and have minimal infrastructure while offering remote trails, campsites, and water access opportunities. These lands are protected for plant and wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, and sustainable forest management. Please enjoy these special places with respect for the land and the enjoyment of others who will come after you.

We wish everyone an enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend and extend this friendly reminder that camping on Tumbledown remains closed. Rangers continue to patrol, and issue summons for illegal camping and fire activity on the mountain. The closure, which took effect in the summer of 2020, was instituted to protect the fragile subalpine vegetation and pond. Visitors have appreciated and complied with the change, benefiting from the cleaner, quieter enjoyment of day hiking on Tumbledown.

*Please be aware of these Public Lands alerts:*

* Nahmakanta and Duck Lake Public Lands are not accessible due to the combined effects of the Winter and Spring storms. Take a look at other options [ [link removed] ].
