Here’s the problem: fossil fuel and utility lobbyists are fighting to stretch subsidy eligibility to cover dirty energy industries, too. Their proposed loopholes could even increase climate-harming emissions, while effectively turning programs designed to fight climate change into yet another dirty energy subsidy for Big Polluters. In December, the Biden-Harris administration proposed guardrails that would help ensure that subsidies cover only truly clean hydrogen, produced with renewables-based electricity and decreasing emissions, as Congress intended.

Since then, fossil fuel and utility lobbyists have been working hard to pressure members of Congress and the Biden-Harris administration to weaken their proposal. Eliminating safeguards, or creating big loopholes for special interests, would undermine our climate goals and raise energy costs for working families, putting our communities and planet at risk.
