Dear John,
This is Nussad’s first Mother’s Day. But, as a Rohingya refugee recently arrived in Indonesia, life is incredibly difficult for Nussad and her infant son.
Nussad travelled to Aceh, Indonesia by boat while heavily pregnant. She is one of thousands of Rohingya refugees who have embarked on dangerous sea crossings to escape violence and persecution - in the hope of finally finding safety. The boats these refugees board are often overcrowded and unseaworthy, with little food or water, and are at risk of succumbing to extreme weather.
Last year, nearly 4,500 people attempted to cross the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal – and one in eight either died or were reported missing as a result. Almost 70% are vulnerable women and children.
In Indonesia, Rohingya refugees have also been the targets of online hate campaigns, which have led to real-life incidents of violence, traumatising both refugee and host communities.
UNHCR is working closely with local authorities to protect Rohingya refugees who have survived these perilous journeys at sea. By providing life-saving assistance, including food, shelter, sanitation and health and psychosocial services, and a range of activities – across education, life skills and sports – we help refugees recover from the trauma that they have endured and restore hope for a brighter future.
