It’s also a time to learn about the challenges those who identify as AANHPI face, and push for better inclusion and representation — including in research on disparities in tobacco use.

Quitting smoking has countless short- and long-term benefits, some of which start to impact the body almost immediately after putting down a cigarette. While decades of research have provided a clear picture of how quitting smoking improves health, research on quitting e-cigarettes is still emerging. Early studies suggest that some chemicals present in e-cigarette aerosols may increase the risk of certain illnesses such as heart disease or cancer, but additional studies on long-term health effects are needed. Young people enrolled in Truth Initiative quit vaping program report high levels of e-cigarette addiction

Youth and young adults enrolled in a Truth Initiative program designed to help e-cigarette users quit reported higher nicotine dependence and frequency of use compared to a general population sample of young people who wanted to stop vaping nicotine, according to research published in Preventive Medicine Reports. The research suggests that those with higher levels of e-cigarette addiction may be more likely to seek help quitting.

This week in tobacco policy news

Maryland – The governor recently signed into law bills that will require tobacco retailers to obtain a license, require tobacco products to be displayed for sale behind a counter, include vaping e-cigarettes in the state’s Clean Indoor Air Act, and increased the cigarette pack tax by $1.25 as well as the tax on other tobacco products.

Ohio – A judge said the recently enacted Ohio law that preempts tobacco laws is unconstitutional. He enjoined the law—which effectively bars local tobacco regulations—as to the cities that sued, while those that didn’t sue are unaffected.
