John,
We need to talk about a bill that just passed in Louisiana, which classifies abortion medications as Schedule IV narcotics, making possession without a prescription punishable by jail time.
Let’s be really clear: this has nothing to do with safety. Mifepristone and misoprostol were approved by the FDA decades ago and have been on the market for more than 20 years. They are very common medications used in the majority of abortion services, and are safer than tylenol.
Patients deserve access to medication abortion regardless of where they live.
This bill is all about power and control. Louisiana already has a near-total abortion ban, but this would make even the earliest abortions more difficult to obtain by adding onerous hurdles for prescribers and patients.
And because these medications are often used to treat miscarriages, this law will impact care for patients who have suffered the loss of a wanted pregnancy as well.
That’s not all: classifying the medications in this way means that patients who receive prescriptions will be added to a state-wide government database—an enormous breach of privacy.
This is just one more way that MAGA extremists are working at state and local levels to criminalize abortion care. Banning abortion is horrifying enough, but they won’t stop there—this insidious policy will add to the catastrophic attack on pregnant patients.
If you agree that abortion medication should remain legal and accessible, regardless of where a patient lives, add your name.
