John -- We all want New Zealand to be a country where everyone gets the chance to own their own home. But the National Government is making it harder for people to do so. They’re scrapping First Home Grants, which is a grant up to $10,000 for Kiwis who have spent years scrimping and saving, contributing to their Kiwisaver and making sacrifices, and just need a hand with the last part of their deposit. For someone who’s never struggled to pay rent, deal with an insecure housing arrangement, operate a strict budget just to put a little aside each week – it may not seem like a big deal. But for many people it is what has helped them to own their own home. It means fewer Kiwis owning more homes, and more people renting. All while the National Government chooses to give a $2.9 billion tax break to landlords. National also wants to bring back no-cause evictions, making life even more uncertain for tenants. Not content with driving Kiwis out of the housing market, this Government’s brought back no-cause evictions, which means a landlord can kick a tenant out without needing a reason and without warning. Join us in calling for National to restore the First Home Grant and ditch no-cause evictions. The last Labour Government built more state homes than any Government since the 1950s – in fact one in six state homes in New Zealand was built in the last six years. We are incredibly proud of that. National’s making it harder to buy a home and harder to get a secure rental – it’s getting harder and harder to believe what they said on the campaign, that life was going to get easier.
