John -- I'm resending this email to make sure you didn't miss it -- Robert Reich
Dear John,
I just got done reviewing some truly frightening numbers.
No, I’m not talking about the latest meaningless New York Times poll. I’m talking about the huge lead that Trump has taken over Biden on TikTok.
According to internal TikTok data reported by the online news outlet Puck, there’s been twice as much pro-Trump content as pro-Biden content on TikTok since November. And videos tagged #Trump2024 have generated twelve times more views than than those tagged #Biden2024.
This is a big, big problem. TikTok has become the number one most popular social media platform for millions of young people — and these are the voters who are likely to decide the 2024 election.
Inequality Media Civic Action is one of the few progressive groups with substantial reach on TikTok, trying to go toe-to-toe with big MAGA, and now we need to ramp up our operations even more to reach as many young voters as possible.
Will you donate $5 a month to help Inequality Media Civic Action get the truth out and reach the voters we need to win on TikTok?
Yes, Robert! I'll start a monthly donation right now!
No, I'm sorry, I can't chip in monthly.
Look, I’ll be honest. I don’t personally spend a lot of time scrolling through TikTok videos. I’d barely heard of it when the team here at Inequality Media Civic Action first told me we needed to start a TikTok account.
But you know who is on TikTok? Young people, i.e., the people who will decide the 2024 presidential election. That’s why the TikTok gap is such a problem for President Biden’s campaign.
According to the Pew Research Center, 63% of teens are on TikTok — more than Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter/X. And 49% say they’re on TikTok several times a day or “almost constantly.” A lot of these young people will be voting for the first time in their lives in 2024, and what they see on TikTok will have a big, big influence on how they vote.
To their credit, the Biden campaign is doing their best, pumping out a huge amount of TikTok videos. But most progressive organizations have been slow to adopt TikTok, instead relying on older platforms like Facebook, and that’s putting the president at a disadvantage.
The good news is that Inequality Media Civic Action has spent the last two years building up our following on TikTok and mastering the tricks of the trade to generate engagement and change minds. Today we’re up to over 721,000 followers and 12 million likes. In fact, we’ve added 30,000 new followers this month alone, and since January 2024, our TikTok engagement has also increased 154.4%.
Now it’s go time. The next six months will decide whether we’re able to save democracy.
