Today, the U.S. Supreme Court weakened the power of thousands of Black voters by upholding South Carolina’s congressional map, which gerrymanders 30,000 Black residents in Charleston.

In a 6-3 decision, the Court ruled that South Carolina did not unlawfully consider race when they drew a congressional district that removed roughly 30,000 Black voters and packed them into a single Congressional district.

In their decision, the Court stated that because the plaintiffs did not provide an alternative map, they could not argue that the South Carolina State Legislature did not act in “good faith,” a precedent not typically required in previous gerrymandering cases. This decision will make it harder for voters to fight unfair maps in the future.
