MPAC Welcomes U.N. Move to Establish International Day of Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide
Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | May 23, 2024 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) upholds and honors the United Nations General Assembly vote ([link removed]) today to establish an annual day of remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, despite furious opposition from Bosnian Serbs and Serbia. The establishment of an annual day of remembrance for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide by the UN General Assembly is a significant step towards acknowledging and honoring the victims of this tragic event, where over 8,000 Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) men and boys were slaughtered by Bosnian Serbs in Srebrenica. The resolution, proposed by Germany and Rwanda, countries tragically linked to genocide, emphasizes the importance of remembering and learning from such dark chapters in history, as well as the necessity to speak up and intervene to prevent human rights violations.

This decision holds particular relevance to Palestine, where the people have also endured generations of conflict, displacement, and human rights violations. Just as the Srebrenica genocide must be recognized and commemorated to prevent such atrocities from happening again, the international community must also acknowledge and address the ongoing genocide faced by the Palestinian people.

By establishing a day of remembrance for the Srebrenica genocide, the UN General Assembly sends a powerful message about the need for reconciliation, justice, and accountability in the face of mass atrocities. This serves as a reminder that the world must stand in solidarity with all communities around the globe that are affected by violence and human rights abuses, including those in Palestine who continue to seek self-determination, justice, and peace.

For over 36 years, MPAC has consistently raised its voice against human rights violations against Muslims and other marginalized communities both at home and abroad and will continue to do so with your support.
