Dear Friend,
Great news! The House of Representatives just passed a bill that would bring independent oversight to federal prisons. Not only did it pass, it passed almost unanimously and across party lines, with a final vote of 392-2!
This is a huge victory. For too long, the Bureau of Prisons has operated with next to no independent oversight—and the results have been disastrous for the over 150,000 people incarcerated in federal prisons and the tens of thousands of people who work there. With independent oversight, we are ever closer to putting a stop to the violence and cruelty we see too much of in our prison system.
This vote is a crucial first step in bringing transparency and accountability to an agency that has been plagued by scandal for decades. However, it’s only the first step. We must urge the Senate to work quickly to get this bill to President Biden’s desk for the sake of everyone who is confined and works in our federal prisons and their families.
We’ll be in touch soon on the bill’s future and what you can do to advocate for its passage. In the meantime, please consider giving a special gift to FAMM to both celebrate this victory and to help us get this bill to the finish line: [link removed] [[link removed]]
Thanks for your support, Friend—FAMM cannot do this without you!
Best,
