Dear Neighbor,
Serving as your representative in Congress is the honor of my life. While I look forward to my time in Southern California for Memorial Day, I wanted to reach out with a few highlights from my work here in Washington during May. I had the opportunity to speak at various events regarding issues deeply important to me.
2024 Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Issue Summit
I had the chance to join several Latino experts, policymakers, and members of Congress at the 2024 CHCI Issue Summit to open the panel “Screening Gaps: Understanding the Impact on Latina Health.”
Latinas face greater risks in our health care system. Only 69 percent of Latinas have a primary care provider, contributing to lower rates of regular screenings for medical issues like diabetes, heart conditions, and breast cancer. There are also many environmental and systemic factors – such as English proficiency, immigration status, and access to childcare – that put Latinas at even greater risk for poor health conditions.
We need to do better for the Latina community. As a proud Latina and member of Congress, I will always fight for Latinas and the immigrant community so we can address these significant gaps in our health care system.
A Caring Society Panel Discussion with Engage & AARP
As the daughter of parents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I unfortunately know firsthand the challenges faced by many caregivers across our country. That’s why I joined with Engage for Women, AARP, and other members of Congress for a panel discussion titled “A Caring Society: What We Need to Advance Caregiving in America.”
During the panel, I discussed legislation I’ve introduced to support our caregivers. My bill, the Credit for Caring Act, would help lower the burden on family caregivers by creating a tax credit for services they provide like home care and adult day care.
Another bill of mine, the CHANGE Act, would streamline early detection of Alzheimer’s and other cognitive diseases to provide critical support for older Americans and their families.
As always, I’ll continue to work and lead efforts to ease the burden on families and their caregivers as well as address and work on solutions for the health disparities faced by Latinas and the immigrant community.
In the meantime, if you require any assistance or have a question with a federal agency, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (562) 860 – 5050.
Sincerely,
Linda T. Sánchez
Member of Congress
