friend – it seems that election fever is upon us!

On 4 July the UK will be voting in a new parliament. The next few weeks are going to be pivotal for our campaigns. Together, we can make sure debt is high on the political agenda.
Here are three easy things you can do right now to push debt up the priority list of our next government:

1. Tell party leaders to commit to a new debt justice law ([link removed])
We’re facing the biggest global debt crisis in over 20 years – and the UK is in a unique position to help. That’s because 90% of the debts owed by lower-income countries to big banks, oil traders and hedge funds are overseen by UK law. A new law here could force greedy lenders to cancel debt.

In the run up to an election, politicians are keener than ever to hear about what matters to voters. You can make sure cancelling debt is on their agenda.

Take action today – add your name to the petition for party leaders to commit to a debt justice law this election. If you’ve already signed the petition, then share it with friends and family. The more of us that act, the stronger we can make our demand for a new law to deliver debt justice for millions.

2. Stand in solidarity with people in debt ([link removed])
The cost-of-living crisis has been one of the biggest shocks of our generation. We’ve all seen bills for essentials like energy and food costs soar whilst and wages and benefits have failed to keep up.

When that happens there’s only one result – crushing debt. Right now, 10 million people in the UK have unmanageable debt.

Next week we’ll be delivering the ‘Together Against Debt People’s Manifesto’ to political parties, as they get ready to publish their own manifestos. Our manifesto has been produced by people who know what it’s like to experience the daily stress of living in debt, and it clearly lays out what can be done. So no matter who wins the election, the road map is there.

Whoever forms the next government can end the UK’s personal debt crisis. Let’s show the government that whoever gets into power, thousands of us stand with people in debt and demand action.

If you’ve already signed, why not share with family and friends so we can make our demand for action even stronger?
3. Donate to boost our campaigns ([link removed])
As an independent organisation, Debt Justice depends on the generosity of thousands of supporters like you. If you’re able to, now would be a great time to donate to make sure we can ramp our campaigns and keep our demands for action loud at this pivotal time.

It looks like we have a busy few weeks ahead of us. We’ll be in touch again soon with more ways you can get involved to make sure debt justice is high on the political agenda this election.

In solidarity,

Heidi, Zak, Wiz and all at Debt Justice
