“This is how we change the world for animals.”

That’s what I remember thinking years ago, when I first learned about the Open Wing Alliance.

I was working in UK farm animal welfare policy at the time, a position that required me to visit factory farms often—where I witnessed the extreme, systemic cruelty in our global food system.

The sheer scale of it was overwhelming. That’s why I remember being awe-struck as I watched some of the world’s biggest corporations remove the worst forms of animal abuse from their policies. PepsiCo. Kellogg’s. And more. They were succumbing to the relentless demands of the Open Wing Alliance—a global coalition founded by The Humane League that unites 95 organizations across 75 countries in ending the abuse of chickens worldwide.

When a job opened up, I knew I had to leap. And today, I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as the new Director of the Open Wing Alliance.

Factory farming is a global crisis. And the Open Wing Alliance is a global solution.

In my first five months in this role, I’ve had the privilege of meeting Open Wing Alliance groups in Ghana, France, New Zealand, Taiwan, Serbia, Mexico, Germany, Ecuador, and more. A group in Ghana secured a cage-free policy from a hotel and made national news. Groups in Peru met to strategize and achieve cage-free commitments in their country. Groups in Latvia are sharing tactics to eradicate the worst abuses of chickens from supply chains.

To me, one of the most beautiful things about the Open Wing Alliance is our shared understanding that we cannot do this alone.

Ending animal abuse on a global scale will take all of us—including you. And one of the most effective ways you can help is by becoming a monthly donor.

I know the fight for farmed animals will be long, difficult, and complex. Laying hens are suffering in cramped cages, unable to spread their wings. Chickens raised for meat are growing so fast that they can’t even walk—suffering from heart problems and organ damage. All over the world, farmed animals are living in misery, unable to defend themselves.

That’s why every Open Wing Alliance member group recognizes that the scale of this challenge requires us to work together. From Ghana to New Zealand, from Serbia to Germany, advocates in 75 countries are putting their heads together to dream, plan, and co-create a more compassionate world.

So when I say we’re changing the world for animals, I mean that.

We’re changing the world.
For the animals,

Carley Betts
Director of Open Wing Alliance
