Galveston County Health District is seeking a Volunteer Coordinator / Adoption Counselor!

This position is responsible for carrying out tasks and duties that are related to volunteers and animal adoptions.

Required:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.
  • Experience with basic animal handling skills/comfort level required.  
  • Knowledge in basic animal care and identifying domestic animal breeds, animal behavior, proper housing, common health problems and safe animal handling.
  • Ability to maintain a high work ethic, with confident speaking skills.
  • Experience with basic office skills (multi-task and organizing).
  • Previous experience working in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic preferred.
  • Volunteer management history preferred.
  • Ability for spur of the moment transportation without relying on organization vehicles.
  • Must possess or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Department of Motor Vehicle check may be required, if applicable.
  • Must have satisfactory DMV/MVR background check.
  • Customer Service Oriented(high level of customers).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent Computer Skills MS Office (high level of email, typing, social media, data entry, image creation).
  • Must be willing and able to work evening and weekend hours if necessary.
  • Must be in compliance with GCHD Immunizations policy.
  • Must be in compliance with ICS training requirements.
  • Must pass criminal background check and drug/alcohol screening.

An equivalent combination of education and work experience which appropriately demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above described essential functions will be considered when hiring for this role.

Traditional Duties:

  • Maintain volunteer database and schedule.
  • Coordinate volunteer outreach activities.
  • Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain volunteers.
  • Give specific information about animal.
  • Explain adoption process.
  • Implant microchips properly and safely to both ARC animals and owned animals from citizens.
  • Develop and execute ideas and plans to promote live release, seek off-site events to attend, promote awareness of the Animal Resource Center, and pursue public education opportunities.

  • Cross-trains with administrative staff.
  • Transport animals in GCHD/personal vehicle when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
