'Mom' legislators see their numbers, influence grow but barriers to elected office remain | Michigan Advance

John,

When I stepped into the role of representing West Michigan, I did so not only as a legislator but as a mother determined to make our government more inclusive and responsive to the needs of families like ours.

Despite the growing influence of mom legislators like myself, the obstacles to entering and staying in elected office remain daunting. Today, mothers make up just 23% of lawmakers. This disparity doesn't just affect me; it affects every policy that impacts our families—from childcare to healthcare.

In 2022, I became the first pro-choice woman and mother elected to serve Michigan’s 3rd district. Since then, I've fought every day to protect and expand access to childcare, safeguard women's healthcare, and ensure our government mirrors the people it serves. But now, my ability to continue this crucial work is at risk.

National Republicans have named my seat a target, and they’re spending millions to unseat me. It’s crucial we keep up our momentum and reach out to voters across our district. Now more than ever, we need leaders in Congress who understand firsthand the challenges and aspirations of mothers and families.

Will you chip in to my campaign right now to ensure we have the resources to protect this seat and take back the House in November?
