Hi John, my name is Lisa and I’m a mother and caregiver to three young kids here in Kansas City.

Raising three kids is a lot of work. Right now, I’m spending the cost of a new car on child care for my toddler every year. It’s over $21,000 a year. And even with that astronomical amount, I’m not able to afford summer or after-school care for my two elementary-age kids – giving up hours of my own time to care for them, sacrificing my mental health and career.

Our broken care system is stretching me thin – and I need more support. But I believe we can fight for a better care system if enough of us rise up together. That’s why I signed the petition for lower costs for care – and why I’m reaching out to see if you can do the same.

I wish we could live near our extended family in California for their support, but the cost of care is even higher there and we can’t afford it. Right now, with our limited budget, we can't even take short trips to visit family as easily or as often as we'd like to.

With lower costs for care, I could rest assured that all three of my kids are receiving the care they need – giving me time to pursue my career and even care for myself. We’d be able to visit our parents in California more often, take vacations together, maybe even buy a new car with the money we’re saving.

We shouldn’t have to sacrifice and spend tens of thousands of dollars to care for our loved ones. We deserve a care system that’s easier on our families, that values affordable childcare, paid leave for all, and accessible aging and disability care.
