Friend – As June approaches, we have a lot to look forward to: Pride, the election, our annual Bill of Rights celebration, and hearing from you in a survey we've launched! Here are highlights of our recent work and some ways that you can get involved. Take Our Supporter SurveyPlease go to acludc.com/survey2024 and take six minutes to complete our supporter survey. Share your perspective so we can learn more about you and better serve the D.C. community. We will randomly select ten people who complete the survey by July 5 and send them free swag from our new D.C. Statehood merch store. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences! Lawsuit Challenges Censorship of Pro-Palestinian Student SpeechOn April 24, we filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Arab Student Union at Jackson-Reed High School that challenged the school administration for unlawfully censoring the student club's pro-Palestinian speech. For months, the administration barred the club from various activities, including showing a film critical of Israel's treatment of Palestinians. The lawsuit alleges that the administration violated the students' rights under the First Amendment, the Equal Access Act, and the D.C. Student Bill of Rights. In response to the lawsuit, the school administration and club have agreed to show an alternative film before the school year ends. While this interim agreement marks a victory for students' rights, our lawsuit to protect the rights of D.C. public school students continues. June 3: Bill of Rights CelebrationMonday, June 3, 6 p.m. You are invited to celebrate another year of defending civil rights and liberties at our 2024 Bill of Rights Celebration! Join us for an exciting evening of community, entertainment, and civil rights as we come together to honor those who have made outstanding contributions to freedom and justice in the District.
June 4: Primary Election DayVoting is one of our most fundamental rights, and the D.C. primary election is on June 4, 2024. Bookmark our Voter Guide for everything you need to know to vote. The guide also shows where D.C. Council candidates land on the critical issues affecting justice and freedom in the District – criminal justice reform, our First Amendment rights, D.C. statehood, and freedom from discrimination. June 8: Join us at the Capital Area Pride Parade!Saturday, June 8, 3:30 p.m. Volunteer with us to share pride and swag with Pride parade watchers. We'll bring the swag, refreshments, and music. June 13: Superior Court Chief Judge Candidate ForumThursday, June 13, 5:15 p.m. Join us and the Council for Court Excellence to hear from the judges who have applied to become the next Chief Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Learn about the priorities and approaches of the Chief Judge applicants prior to the June 20 deadline for submitting public comments to the D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission.
