What kind of activities have you done to connect with nature this month?
Editor’s Note: As we all begin to deal with a global pandemic with COVID-19, we wanted to let you know how the Sierra Club is adapting and responding, so we can keep doing the important work of protecting our natural and human environment and fighting for a just, clean energy future.
Hi Supporter,
I don’t remember exactly how I heard about Team Sierra, but I first got involved by participating in the inaugural Earth Day Hike fundraiser. The idea immediately grabbed my attention because, unlike other fundraising events, this format allowed me to do exactly what I wanted to do. So when I realized I could raise money for a cause I care so deeply about by doing something I’ve loved to do my whole life, it was a no brainer!
My dad has been taking me on hikes throughout Northern California for as long as I can remember. His deep connection to and appreciation for the California wilderness, the redwoods in particular, definitely rubbed off on me from a young age and it’s something my dad and I always find time to do together to this day. Our time spent together in nature is really meaningful to us both.
Of course, things look different this Earth Day. I read an idea on Facebook about creating a sort of "bucket list" for when this is all over. Any time the urge to go somewhere or do something comes up, you put that idea on a sticky note and then once we're past this, you pick those notes off one by one as you do those activities. I love this idea! Not only does it remind me of all the things to be grateful for in my 'normal' life, it also gives me a lot to look forward to! For me, that list includes a trip to The Huntington Library and Gardens and a weekend trip up the coast to visit family in San Luis Obispo.
That is definitely one of the many hard parts about all of this - missing the opportunity to go enjoy spring in full bloom. And I can't wait to head up to San Luis Obispo to not only reconnect with my family in person, but to breathe in some fresh seaside air and soak in the beautiful views and good vibes of the ocean. For now, my neighborhood walks are keeping me happy and healthy, but they also serve as reminders of all of the beautiful places that are out there, just waiting for me to come visit.
There’s still time to get a 50th Anniversary Earth Day T-shirt. Typically, our Earth Day T-shirts are reserved for those who commit to raising $35 or more for Sierra Club during Earth Month. This year, we understand that asking friends & family for donations might be tough, so we’re offering the shirt to anyone who makes a donation of any amount. We’re on track to raise $50,000 this Earth Month thanks to incredible supporters like you. Get your shirt by making a donation here.
Note: Shipping is US only and takes 5-10 business. Shirts are limited to 1 per person. They’re made in California and are 50% cotton and 50% modal. Sizes XS-3XL available in unisex sizing.
Why We're Raising Money Now
Sadly, in the face of the COVID-19 crisis, the Trump administration hasn’t slowed its assault on our air and water; in fact, it is exploiting the moment to remove basic protections for air and water. As the pandemic worsened, the administration rolled back clean car standards and has suspended EPA enforcement of environmental laws, allowing unchecked pollution and putting our health at even greater risk.
In order to continue to make progress towards continued protections of our land, air, water, and wildlife, we need your help.
