Tailored for non-Native researchers and policymakers, “Centering Native Perspectives and Wisdom,” authored by Laudan Aron and Lizzy Ferrara, examines historical colonization’s enduring effects on current health disparities among American Indian communities. Highlighting traditional Native American health concepts, including spirituality and connectedness with nature, the review contrasts these with Western health paradigms, which often neglect these vital aspects. By advocating for including Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, the research supports a more inclusive, holistic approach to understanding and improving health outcomes within these communities.
Policies for Action announces six new research projects that examine the impacts of state-level preemption policies on racial justice and health equity. The studies will explore how preemption affects local policy on a wide range of issues, including education, land use, worker’s rights, political participation, birth outcomes, and housing code enforcement.
Explore the latest findings from New York University’s Wagner School, where researchers have been studying New York City’s Vision Zero initiative. This research, using 2009–21 Medicaid data, identified a 30 percent reduction in traffic-related injuries among low-income residents because of the initiative. This outcome benefited Black New Yorkers in particular. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic reversed many of those gains, as city resources were diverted from enforcing those solutions. This analysis provides essential insights for policymakers on the effectiveness of proactive urban safety policies, as well as the risk to sustainability during crises.

During Women’s Health Month, we’re spotlighting research projects that focus on women’s health. Notable projects include the University of Minnesota’s innovative antiracist approach to postpartum care and the University of Alabama’s targeted strategies to reduce infant mortality rates among Black communities. Additional studies look at the impacts of paid leave and workplace flexibility on the health and economic well-being of women. These studies deepen our understanding of health disparities and emphasize policy’s essential role in fostering equitable health outcomes.
