I just called and extended my congratulations to Maxine Dexter on her election to represent Oregon’s Third Congressional District.
I am so proud of the campaign that I and my supporters ran. We were clear, from the beginning, that we were going to run a campaign based on values, and on our vision for the country and the district.
Values of integrity, commitment, and justice. A vision of a country and a district that truly honors and serves all of our communities. In which we are all equal, and all deserving.
That vision is what I have spent the last several decades of my life working for: on the board of Planned Parenthood, fighting for reproductive rights; ensuring that frontline workers got better wages for their heroic work; holding fossil fuel companies accountable for destructive climate change; and always advocating for resources for those who have been left out and left behind. This work is why over 100 local community leaders– who I have been so proud to work with–endorsed my campaign.
I am so proud of running a campaign in which people who have never before felt included, did. A campaign In which those who have felt on the margins, weren’t just at the table - were running the table. A campaign powered by over 5600 donations, most of whom were grassroots donors who contributed what they had to help me raise over $1 million - and we did it the hard way, with donors by and large from this district.
This race showed so clearly why we need to have real campaign finance reform that allows for public financing. Outside super PACs came in and spent an unprecedented $6 million, even timing their contributions so that they wouldn’t have to show who was trying to buy this election until well after the votes were cast. While we weren’t able to change that fact this time around, I remain committed to working to make our elections truly democratic.
There is so much work to be done. And I will continue that work. To create shared prosperity, a sustainable planet, and a truly strong democracy. One in which people - not profit, not money - have power.
We are not there. But we will continue to fight. While we may be disappointed in the results - the fight was worth it, and always is.
I would like to thank all of my endorsers, donors, volunteers, supporters, close friends and family for their support on this journey: my gratitude is immeasurable. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the time and energy you poured into this campaign –– we should all be proud of the movement we built, and the way in which we led this campaign with our integrity and our values first.
–– Susheela
