Hey John, it’s Laela, Chapter Organizing Manager with Sunrise Movement and Kansas City Hub Member.

In a moment, I’m going to ask you to make a donation to Sunrise Movement. But first, I hope you’ll allow me to explain why your support is so important — especially for my hub in Kansas City.

Together with KC Tenants, the citywide tenants union, and Stand Up KC, we WON our Vote No campaign, defeating a stadium proposal that would have prioritized billionaires over everyday people, destroyed useable buildings, and created racist redlining and displacement of citizens.

Fund Better Buses Not Billionaire Ballparks

Thanks to our organizing, Kansas City-area voters rejected a ballot measure to extend a three-eighth cent sales tax for 40 years. This tax would have funded a new downtown stadium for the Royals by 2028 and a $1 billion renovation of Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs.

We beat billionaires who plastered TV and radio stations with ads featuring Chiefs and Royals stars like Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, and Bobby Witt Jr. We won despite being vastly outspent by the leadership of the Chiefs and the Royals themselves.

There are far better ways to allocate taxpayer dollars, like enhancing public transit or committing to constructing affordable, eco-friendly housing. We need leaders who prioritize the people's needs and do not get caught up in political theater while our basic services crumble.

So clearly, our fight is not over. But Sunrise's support made the difference in our victory. They gave us the tools to succeed in getting our message out there and how to work with other local groups to get this done.

So that’s why I’m humbly asking: Can you chip in $5, $10, or any amount to help hundreds of Sunrisers across the country fund climate activism like this in their cities?
