Jack, Daily Kos relies on grassroots donations to cover our operating expenses and make ends meet. The bad news is that we are only at 57% of our May fundraising goal.
Daily Kos isn't alone in facing financial hardships. Almost every single news organization has had to evolve in order to survive. As I mention in the email below, some news organizations have used restrictive paywalls or costly subscriptions to bring in revenue. The downside is that these streams of revenue limit access to the news to only those who can afford to pay for it.
That doesn't work for Daily Kos; it goes against our mission of delivering progressive news and fighting for democracy by giving our readers and activists the information and resources needed to make impactful change.
At Daily Kos, we think it is vital to the health of our democracy for people to have free access to the news. That's why instead of generating revenue with paywalls, Daily Kos relies on donations from our community to make ends meet and keep our content and advocacy accessible to everyone, no matter their ability to pay.
When you make a donation to Daily Kos, it means we can continue to make our content free and accessible to everyone. We realize that not everyone can afford to make a donation. That also means that they wouldn't be able to access our content if we locked it up behind a paywall.
Our mission is at stake. We need to raise $176,006 by the end of the month. Please support accessibility progressive news and activism with a $5 or more to Daily Kos today.

Thank you for all you do,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
I need to be frank with you about something, Jack: I feel like I have been writing the same email for years now.
The truth is that I have probably written different versions about Daily Kos's financial hardships hundreds of times—and for good reason—we have been struggling financially for years.
Daily Kos once relied solely on advertising revenue to support all our work and operations. Unfortunately, because of Big Tech taking up an ever-growing share of digital advertising revenue those days are long gone and likely will never return.
We aren't alone. No news organization, whether it is print, digital, public, award-winning, niche, or general interest, has been able to escape the financial hardships that have plagued the industry. Some have survived by charging to access their content through paywalls or expensive subscriptions, some have made budget cuts, including staff layoffs. Some news outlets haven't survived.
Daily Kos has survived these last couple of years because of the generous support of our community donating what they can to power our work. Today over 60% of our revenue comes from donations of just a few dollars. We literally can't survive without your help.
However, with such an important election on the horizon, it's not enough for Daily Kos to just survive—we need to thrive! Can you support progressive news and activism with a donation of $5 or whatever amount is meaningful to you today?
PLEASE DONATE
Thank you for all you do,
Amanda McKay, Daily Kos
