Dear John,
At a time of increased anti-trans rhetoric, legislation, and violence, storytelling is a beacon of hope–materializing transformative social changes necessary for transgender and gender expansive people to thrive, gain visibility beyond the binary, and be celebrated for their excellence.
In 2016, Equality Virginia created the Transgender Advocacy Speakers Bureau (TASB) which aimed to build understanding of the trans community, foster relationships between trans folks and local organizations, and develop the public speaking and advocacy skills of trans and nonbinary Virginians. Taking what we’ve learned from TASB, and recognizing the ever changing legal and cultural landscape for the community, we’re proud to launch Equality Virginia’s newest transgender justice program Transformation Storytellers – a collective of rising storytellers and community builders who will define and defend the diverse experiences of our community throughout Virginia across different platforms and timelines– whether it’s a personal essay, video, or even a work of art, elevating trans stories helps us take back the mic.
GLAAD’s 2023 Accelerating Acceptance Survey found that non-LGBTQ adults are 30% more likely to feel familiar with LGBTQ+ people if they have been exposed to their stories through media or entertainment. We can transform people’s worldviews by making our stories accessible to a broad audience, through multimedia advocacy platforms.
But building equity in the community is like moving a mountain. This monumental task requires persistent effort, collaboration, and strategic planning. Each step, whether small or large, contributes to the gradual shifting of social norms and barriers.
This is how Equality Virginia is planning to move the mountain towards equity through Transformation Storytellers:
Breaking Down Obstacles : Our stories are being told for us and typically define us by our hardship, but we have the power to chip away at the rock of oppressive movements and envision a better world. We break free from false narratives by taking control of the cultural shift, illustrating how complex systems impact people’s lives, demonstrating both existing problems and possible solutions that will impact policy change.
Collective Effort: Moving a mountain is not a solo endeavor –it requires the strength and cooperation of many people. Your involvement is not just welcomed, it is essential. When we come together, united by a common purpose, we create a force that is greater than the sum of its parts. You are a vital part of this journey, and your unique skills and perspectives matter deeply. Let’s unite and mutually support one another.
Patience and Persistence: Change often happens gradually through continuous advocacy and action. Psychologists suggest we are 22 times more likely to remember a fact when it’s wrapped up in a story. A good story inspires people to care. They are the golden threads that weave us together in a strong community fabric of empathy that transcends boundaries of lived experience and inspires us to work towards liberation in our communities.
Careful Planning: We want to build a narrative ecosystem that uses collective power for trans/gender expansive people by strategically developing, disseminating, and archiving stories that highlight resistance, resilience, authenticity, revolutionary visions, as well as compassion and joy! We would love to hear the stories of the Trans community leaders, activists, and artists, but we are just as committed to helping new storytellers find their voice and platform.
Celebrating Progress: Every small amount of earth moved represents progress in the endeavor of moving the mountain. And each step towards equity –whether it’s passing inclusive legislation, increasing representation, or fostering supportive environments–should be celebrated as part of the broader journey.
Equality Virginia welcomes transgender, nonbinary and gender expansive folx to join the Transformation Storytellers. Your story holds the power to uplift, inspire, and create change. Let's embark on this journey together, illuminating narratives of empowerment, joy, authenticity, and resilience in your most authentic voice.
