Liz Willen Hi all!

Graduations can be an emotional ending, even in this year of protests and disruptions. At Wells College in upstate New York, however, there was an unexpected finality to last week’s ceremony, as the college had recently announced — to the surprise of many — that it will permanently shut down.

The news is creating havoc for students, parents and faculty members, and it came just a week ([link removed]) before finals, as The Hechinger Report’s Meredith Kolodner explains. She’s still trying to learn more about how the decision was made and just how much college officials knew before the last-minute announcement, which comes at a time when U.S. colleges are closing at a rate of one per week, due to enrollment declines and the end of pandemic-era related aid. Please get in touch ([link removed]) if you can add more information.

This week, The Hechinger Report also goes inside ([link removed]) a New Mexico charter school network for Native Americans that offers an education that draws on each student's traditional culture and language. We also take a look at research examining whether AI programs can help grade student essays ([link removed]) .

As always, we love to hear from our readers and reach out to others to become members ([link removed]) .
