At a time when Americans are grappling with economic uncertainty—struggling with rising costs and corporate greed—the 2025 budget has seen a staggering defense request of over $25 billion for the Unfunded Priorities List (UPL), in addition to an already enormous $895 billion defense budget. Enough is enough—the American people should be the priority.

The UPL–additional programs and activities the Pentagon would fund if given more money–encourages a cycle of excessive spending, where nearly one-third of our defense budget is channeled to military contractors known for their price-gouging tactics. In 2023 alone, these entities spent $138 million lobbying Congress, a reminder to the pervasive influence of corporate interests over our defense policy.

The Streamline Pentagon Spending Act is a bipartisan bill that aims to repeal the annual mandate for Pentagon wish lists, promoting accountability, transparency, and smarter fiscal policies.

It’s time for Congress to repeal the requirements for Pentagon wish lists. They undermine the budgetary process and increase an already ballooning military budget, making it even more difficult for the Pentagon to address long-standing financial mismanagement issues. Congress must take decisive action to prevent wasteful Pentagon funding.
