Today, I want to tell you a little bit about how I got to where I am and why I’ve always been called to serve, in the CIA, the White House, the Pentagon, the House of Representatives, and now, the Senate.

But first, I have to ask: Will you chip in to support my campaign for U.S. Senate?

There are 3 moments that most people will never forget—3 moments where you remember exactly where you were and who you were with.

The first moment was 9/11. I was 24 years old, and I happened to be in New York City on my 2nd day of grad school. By the time the dust had settled, I knew that my place was in national security. It was my first call to service. By the time I graduated, I had been recruited into the CIA, starting me on a path that took me to Iraq for three tours alongside the military, to the White House, and to the Pentagon.

The second moment was November 8th, 2016, when we all sat around watching the election results. In the months that followed, I started to think about domestic politics more than ever before. I started looking for a local Democratic group, having never knocked a door or made a phone call to a voter in my life.

But there was also a third moment, one that was particularly personal to me. It was May 4th, 2017 and I was watching CNN. Republican lawmakers were in the Rose Garden, celebrating a House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

And in that moment, I watched my then-Congressman beaming with pride at the prospect of repealing a law that protects those with pre-existing conditions and prevents insurance companies from gouging them. In that moment, I thought about my mom, who, years earlier, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and didn’t have health insurance, having let it lapse after years of being gouged by big insurance companies. For me, this was another call to service.

That day, I decided that my then-Congressman deserved to be fired, and that I would try to be the one to make it happen.

So I did.

These are the moments that made me who I am.

I want to continue serving Michiganders in the U.S. Senate, but I need your help to get there. Will you chip in to help us build the infrastructure to fight back against Republican attacks and win in November?
