John,
Ground Game Texas has been working hard in South Texas for the last three years, seeking to boost voter turnout. This year we’re leading a campaign in the city of McAllen to adopt new campaign finance reforms — a very popular local demand.
Our work in the Rio Grande Valley wouldn’t be possible without Karen Salazar, our campaign manager.
Karen Salazar first joined Ground Game in 2022 as a field organizer in our Living Wage campaigns in the cities of Alton and Edinburg. She then assisted other campaigns, knocking doors in El Paso for our Climate Charter campaign and serving on the data team (verifying petition signatures) for campaigns in San Antonio and Lubbock. Now she’s leading our McAllen campaign, which has already collected over 4,000 signatures in support of a ground-breaking anti-corruption, pro-democracy ballot proposition.
Ground Game Texas is elevating progressive leaders across Texas and building a pipeline of powerful organizers. Support our work today!
Karen is part of a new generation of progressive organizers in South Texas who give us great optimism for the future. She just graduated from the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley, earning a B.A. in Political Science, with honors. She’s supervising a team of organizers who are attempting to do something that hasn’t been done in local political history — amend the City Charter via ballot initiative.
One of the reasons we are promoting campaign finance reform is so that young leaders like Karen can have a greater impact on local politics. The current rules allow candidates to take checks of $5,000 and $10,000 from developers and interest groups, which means that everyday people have a hard time getting officials to listen to their demands. By cutting the maximum contribution to $500 per election, and by adopting other pro-democracy reforms, we hope to create space for grassroots organizers to impact city elections and local policy.
Ground Game is investing in a new generation of Texas organizers — people like Karen Salazar. Consider a recurring contribution to sustain this work!
And please join us in congratulating Karen — for her recent graduation, and her work for political change!
With gratitude,
Ground Game Texas
