Dear friend,

The debt crisis is in the news this week. That's because many African countries are now spending more money on debt repayments than health, education or climate – and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown just joined the call for urgent debt cancellation. [1]

Fifty-four countries are in crisis, trapped in debt by greedy lenders who are refusing to play ball in negotiations. This Thursday, our Debt, colonialism and power event will explore what it’s like to live in a country in debt crisis, with Ghanaian campaigner Bernard Anaba.

It’s decades since countries like Ghana gained independence. But the colonial legacies of such countries have left them dependent on debt to survive.

Together, we’ll explore how debt has been used as a form of power over many decades. We’ll hear about how people in lower-income countries like Ghana are resisting – and what you can do to be part of the campaign to cancel the debt.

Just like my colleague Tim explained in the press this week:

‘...the [African] continent is experiencing the worst debt crisis in a generation, consigning millions to a life of poverty’. [1]

It’s time for urgent action on debt. Join us on Thursday to find out more, and how together we can help win justice for millions. ([link removed])

In solidarity,

Zak, Wiz, Heidi and everyone at Debt Justice
