|
The latest data shows that US property crime rates rose 6.7% in 2022 — the first increase in over two decades. A rise in larceny primarily drove this uptick, but rates are still well below historic levels. Here’s a look at the FBI data.
-
Rising larceny and motor vehicle theft rates account for much of the increase. Larceny, which includes pickpocketing, shoplifting, and bicycle theft, ticked up 7.4%. The motor vehicle theft rate rose by 10.5%. Meanwhile, burglary rates fell 0.4%.

|
-
Larceny accounted for 71.7% of property crime in 2022, up from 67.9% in 2011, while motor vehicle theft accounted for 14.5%, up from 7.9%. Burglary accounted for 13.8%, down from 24.1%.
-
Property crimes per 100,000 people rose from 1,832 in 2021 to 1,954 in 2022. For context, the property crime rate has declined by 62% since its 1991 peak, when there were 5,140 offenses per 100,000 people.
